Quick Setup for Best Performance

Flatten the Sole on a Reference Surface

Place the plane sole-down on a known flat surface with sandpaper taped to it. Rub the sole in a figure-eight pattern until you achieve an even, matte scratch pattern across the entire surface, indicating it is perfectly flat.

Sharpen the Blade to a Keen Edge

Using a honing guide, sharpen the high carbon steel blade on coarse, medium, and fine grit stones. Start with a 25-degree primary bevel, then add a 30-degree micro-bevel at the very tip for a durable, razor-sharp edge.

The No. 4-1/2 is larger and heavier (over 6 lbs) than a standard No. 4 plane. This extra mass and wider 2-3/8″ blade make it superior for smoothing larger surfaces like table tops and boards, providing more stability and fewer passes.
The blade is made of high carbon steel, which takes and holds a keen edge well for smooth planing. Regular sharpening on diamond or water stones will keep it performing at its best for fine finishing cuts.
The V3 iteration features improved casting quality, finish, and overall performance based on feedback from earlier versions. The focus has been on ensuring the castings are sound, the machining is precise, and the components like the lever cap are robust.
It is ideal for the final smoothing pass on hardwoods and softwoods before finishing. Its weight and large mouth are designed to produce the finest possible surface, reducing or eliminating the need for sanding.
The stress-relieved ductile iron body is very durable. We recommend wiping it down after use, occasionally applying a light oil to the unpainted surfaces to prevent rust, and storing it in a dry location. The sole can be waxed for smoother glide.
